DALLAS (SMU)-SMU women's tennis improved to 12-2 for the season after a triumphant victory (5-2) over the No. 62 Wolfpack (1-6) of North Carolina State at Turpin Tennis Stadium on Friday, February 20.
The Mustangs set the stage for a win in a doubles sweep, with senior Conference USA Player of the Week Natalia Bubien and junior partner Pavi Francis taking down N.C. State's top duo No. 33 Lenka Hojckova and Berkeley Brock.
"One of our goals today was to set the tone in doubles, which we did. We have put a lot of emphasis on doubles in practice and that paid off today, especially with Natalia and Pavi beating a nationally-ranked doubles team in impressive fashion," said head coach Lauren Longbotham-Meisner.
In singles competition, junior Nicole Briceno beat out (6-4, 6-4) Neils Barringer in a high-energy match to lead the Mustangs at the three spot. Senior Kristen Reid fought her way back from a first set loss to secure the win (0-6, 6-2, 6-4) over Diana Mortlock.
As well, senior Kseniia Tokarieva blanked Pender Sessoms in a straight set victory (6-0, 6-0), while senior Monica Neveklovska earned a win (7-5, 6-3) after overcoming a first set tiebreaker.
"As a team this wasn't our best performance in singles. The wind made play messy, but we were able to pull out the win. However, we were thrilled to beat a nationally-ranked ACC team to improve our record to 12-2. This will give us a lot of confidence heading into next week as we prepare to face a very good Arkansas team," said Longbotham-Meisner.
The Mustangs' next competition will take place in Fayetteville, Arkansas when SMU faces the Arkansas Razorbacks on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
