DALLAS - Tyreke Evans scored 26 points and No. 14 Memphis topped SMU 79-66 at Moody Coliseum on Wednesday night. Paul McCoy led SMU with 16 points and six assists.
The Mustangs took a 41-39 lead with 13:43 to play in the second half on a driving layup by McCoy. Memphis (19-3, 8-0) then went on a 21-5 run that gave them the lead for good. Evans scored eight points in the surge, including a 3-pointer that gave Memphis a 60-46 lead with just over 4 minutes remaining.
SMU (6-14, 1-7) outrebounded the Tigers 32-29 as Mouhammad Faye had a team-high seven boards. The Mustangs have won the battle on the boards in six of eight league games. Bamba Fall had six rebounds in the game and now has 503 for his career, becoming the 30th SMU player to eclipse 500 career boards .
McCoy had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting for SMU, while Faye added 14 and Derek Williams 13. Robert Nyakundi finished with 11 points to give SMU four players in double figures. McCoy and Williams each had a game-high six assists. That matched McCoy's season-best. Faye also had four assists as SMU had 17, which is a season-high in league play this year.
Shawn Taggart scored 14 points and Robert Dozier and Roburt Sallie both had 13 for the Tigers.
The Mustangs and Tigers meet again in Memphis on Feb. 18 at the FedExForum. SMU's next game is a non-conference home game against Cal State-Bakersfield on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Ponies resume league play when Houston comes to Dallas next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
