NEW ORLEANS, La. (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team is headed back to the postseason for the 10th time, including the second time in as many years and the sixth in the last 12.
After falling, 62-51, to UCF in the semifinal of the Conference USA Championships in New Orleans, the Mustangs (20-11) will await word next week about whether they will receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Even if they don't, SMU's status as the 2008-09 regular-season champion assures the Ponies of an invitation to the WNIT.
The Mustangs got double-digit scoring performances from three players, including 11 points apiece from junior Brittany Gilliam and sophomore Haley Day and 10 from junior Jillian Samuels. But it was not enough, as UCF star Emma Cannon had 18 points and 19 rebounds to lead her team to a hard-fought win. Day came up one rebound short of a double-double.
Junior post Alice Severin anchored the stingy defense that allowed UFC shooters to connect on just 29.3 percent of their shots. Severin led the defense with five blocked shots, falling one short of the all-time record for blocks in a single game by an SMU player.
The five blocked shots increased Severin's season total to 22, reclaiming the team lead and giving her one more block this season than she had in her first two seasons combined.
