Basel Honored With C-USA Spirit Of Service Award

IRVING, Texas (C-USA/SMU) - SMU swimming All-American Jennifer Basel was one of 12 student-athletes to receive the winter Conference USA Spirit of Service Award, C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced today. The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, indoor track & field, rifle and swimming.

Basel, a Sterling, Va., native, volunteers at the Scottish Rite Hospital, which treats Texas children with orthopedic conditions, by helping with game nights and other activities for inpatients. Basel has also taken part in numerous activities on campus, including SMU's National Girls in Sports Day, working the Tour de Fleur, and speaking to middle school students at SMU's Visioneering event. The chemistry and mathematics major is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and has received numerous academic awards for her performance in the classroom. In the pool, Basel qualified for the 2008 Olympic trials in the 200 IM, and is a seven-time senior national qualifier.
