DALLAS (SMU) - Former SMU coach Jimmy Tubbs passed away on Saturday, May 9. He was 60.
Tubbs served as head men's basketball coach during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, compiling a 27-30 record. Tubbs also spent 12 seasons at SMU as an assistant under head coaches Mike Dement and John Shumate. Tubbs was an integral part of helping SMU capture the Southwest Conference title and reach the NCAA Tournament in 1992-93.
"We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jimmy Tubbs," said SMU Director of Athletics Steve Orsini. "Coach Tubbs loved SMU and it showed during his 14 years on the Hilltop. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."
Prior to arriving at SMU, Tubbs was the head coach at Kimball High School in Dallas for eight years. He guided the Knights to a 232-42 record, which culminated with a UIL Class 5A state championship in 1990. He earned District Coach of the Year honors five times and was the Metroplex Coach of the Year twice. During Kimball's state championship season, Tubbs was chosen as the Texas High School Boys' Coach of the Year.
Tubbs received his degree in History from Bishop College in 1972 and a Master's of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Prairie View A&M in 1976. Born in Oakwood, Texas, Tubbs is survived by his son, Andrew.
