MIDLAND, Texas (SMU) --- Aleksandra Malyarchikova of the SMU women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinal of the Midland Racquet Club Invitational as the Mustangs started the 2009-10 season. Shahzoda Hatamova also advanced to the third round of the 64 person event. Malyarchikova, who was the No. 4 seed in the tournament, and Hatamova each fell to eventual finalist No. 5 seed Mary Weatherholt of Nebraska.
"It was a very tough tournament and a good chance to see where we are against some of the best teams in the country," said SMU head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner.
The entire SMU roster gets underway this weekend at the Rice Fall Classic, which is Friday through Sunday in Houston.
