DALLAS (AP) -Justin Hurtt scored 17 points and Tulsa began the game with a 16-0 run in a 63-56 victory over SMU on Wednesday night.

Reigning Conference USA Player of the Week Ben Uzoh had 16 points and four assists for the Golden Hurricane (13-3, 3-0), which beat SMU for the ninth consecutive time.

The Mustangs (6-9, 0-2) got 15 points and a game-best 10 rebounds from Papa Dia. Mouhammad Faye scored 17 points, and Derek Williams had 10.

Five Tulsa players scored during the opening spurt before Paul McCoy made a free throw after 7:09 had expired to get SMU on the board. Tulsa led 26-17 at halftime.

SMU cut it to 34-30 on Faye's layup with 13:06 left. Tulsa rebuilt its edge to 55-38 with 6:03 to go, but SMU ran off the next 10 points to make it 55-48 with 3:35 left. The teams battled evenly from there.

NEXT GAME: SMU concludes its three-game homestand against the UAB Blazers (14-2, 2-0 C-USA) on Saturday, Jan. 16 inside Moody Coliseum. UAB, is receiving votes in both the Associated Press poll and the ESPN/USA Today poll. Tip is at 7 p.m. CT.

TEAM

-SMU took care of the basketball, committing just five turnovers, the best school mark in Conference USA history.

-The Mustangs had a steal on three straight possessions from 4:40-3:46 in the second half. Forced 15 turnovers on the night including nine steals.

-Outscored Tulsa 12-4 in points off turnovers.

INDIVIDUAL

Frank Otis
-Tied his season-high with two steals, both in the first half.

Mouhammad Faye
-Scored 17 points after missing the past two games due to injury. It is his ninth game this season in double digits.

Papa Dia
-Scored 15 points. Made it the 10th game of the season with 10+ points. Also pulled down 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season and eighth of his career.

Mike Walker
-His fadeaway in the second half, was just his second two-point field goal of the year (2-5). He is 12-24 from three-point range on the season.

Derek Williams
-Scored 10 points, giving him eight straight games in double digits.
