BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team fell 62-60 to UAB in Birmingham in the Mustangs' Conference USA opener Thursday afternoon when Brittany Gilliam's buzzer-beater from 3-point range didn't go down.
The Blazers (7-6, 1-0 C-USA) knocked down 2-of-4 free throws in the final 10 seconds of the contest to take the two-point lead. Gilliam ended up with the ball in her hands and the Mustangs needing a last-second basket, but this time it didn't fall. The senior guard also hit a last-second shot that lifted the Mustangs over Hofstra earlier this season.
SMU (10-4, 0-1 C-USA) stretched a slim lead to seven points with 9:08 left in the first half, but the Blazers quickly erased the lead in a game which featured 13 ties and 10 lead changes.
The Blazers' largest lead was also seven, coming at the 12:15 mark of the second half. SMU had the lead just two more times the rest of the game. Both were short lived one-point leads.
Gilliam led the Mustangs with 15 points. Jillian Samuels added 11 points, and Alice Severin scored 10 in the loss. SMU shot 43.2-percent from the field to UAB's 39.7-percent, but the Blazers shot 14 more times, making 25-of-58 to SMU's 19-of-44.
SMU will complete the road trip Saturday at Memphis. The Mustangs and Tigers are scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m. in the Fedex Forum.
