HOUSTON, Texas (SMU) --- The SMU volleyball team earned a critical road win at Rice, 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 25-16), on Friday night. With the win, the Mustangs move to 17-4 overall this season and 9-1 in Conference USA action.
Junior outside hitter Dana Powell led the Mustangs with 19 kills. Senior outside hitter Kathryn Wilkerson and middle blocker Courtney Manning also earned double-digit kills with 13 and 10, respectively. Senior Caitlin Adair was efficient on the night, converting on 7 of 13 swings to register a match-high .462 hitting percentage.
Kelli Becerra once again led the Mustangs in assists, finishing with 46 in the match. The junior added in 18 digs to mark her 12th double-double this season.
Libero Sidney Stewart notched a team-high 21 digs in the match. Three other Mustangs registered double-digit digs as Becerra (18), Wilkerson (12) and Susan Lewis (12) combined to provide SMU with an outstanding defensive performance. As a team, the Mustangs held Rice to a .182 hitting percentage.
SMU returns to the court tomorrow night with a 7 p.m. match at Houston. The Mustangs, who are currently ranked second in C-USA, are on a five match winning streak.
SMU head coach Lisa Seifert and the Mustangs have their best record in program history through 21 matches. Seifert, who has been head coach since the program's inception in 1996, leads all C-USA current coaches with wins at current school with 227.
