DALLAS (SMU) --- The SMU volleyball team beat UTEP in straight sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-23) on Sunday afternoon at Moody Coliseum. With today's win, the Mustangs move to 19-5 overall and remain in second place in Conference USA with an 11-2 league record.
SMU's outside hitters propelled the Mustang offense to a .281 attack percentage. Kathryn Wilkerson (9 kills), Dana Powell (11 kills) and Jessica Oliver (10 kills) all turned in impressive performances. Additionally, Courtney Manning converted on 8 of 17 swings to post a team-high .412 hitting percentage.
Defensively, the Mustangs were led by Powell, who earned 14 digs for a double-double. Libero Sidney Stewart followed with 13 digs of her own as SMU held UTEP (12-13, 4-8 C-USA) to a .202 hitting clip.
During the match SMU continually found its way out of trouble. During the first set UTEP led for most of the game, including a 13-7 lead, but the Mustangs rallied from behind to win the opening set. In the final set, the Ponies trailed 22-20, but went on a 5-1 run to close out the game and win the match.
SMU returns to action next weekend with home matches against Marshall and East Carolina. The Mustangs defeated each of next week's opponents in their matchups earlier this season.
