DALLAS (SMU) --- The SMU women's basketball team (0-1) lost in a thriller, 44-43, to Utah in the season opener on Friday night at Moody Coliseum. With three seconds remaining in the game, Utah's Janita Badon sunk a shot from the free throw line to give the Utes (1-0) the win.
"Utah is a good team, but we've got to come out and play better," SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola said. "We only scored 19 points in the first half and we were out of sync. We have to get better and we will."
Senior forward Delisha Wills scored her 1,000th career point on a free throw during the second half. Wills, who scored a team-high 13 points tonight, becomes the 18th player in SMU history to reach the 1,000 point mark.
After leaving the half tied, SMU controlled much of the second half, including a five-point lead with 3:36 left in the game. With under a minute in the game, and the score tied, Haley Day added a free throw to give the Mustangs the lead. After a Ute missed three pointer and offensive rebound, Badon hit the game-winning shot.
SMU point guard Alisha Filmore led the game with three assists and added in six points and three rebounds. Also adding in a solid performance for the Mustangs, center Christine Elliott pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and scored eight points. The junior was a perfect 4-for-4 from the stripe.
SMU held the Utes to 32.1 percent from the field tonight, but only shot 26.8 percent as a team. As a team SMU went 20-27 from the line, while Utah only made 3-of-8 attempts.
The Mustangs return to action next Wed. Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m., when they travel to rival No. 23 TCU.
