FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) --- The SMU women's basketball lost in double overtime to No. 23/25 TCU, 87-73, on Wednesday evening at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Mustangs pushed the Horned Frogs into two overtimes, but TCU pulled away in the second overtime led by Emily Carter, who finished with 43 points.

"I thought both teams fought hard tonight," SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola said. "We really showed some good heart as a team tonight. It's a tough loss, but we'll learn from it and be a better team for it."

Samantha Mahnesmith led all Mustangs (0-2) with a career-high 19 points and hit 4 of 5 shots from behind the arc. Also in double figures for SMU, Christine Elliott and Raquel Christian each finished with 12 points. Elliott pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds, including a game-high seven offensive boards.

In the first eight minutes, the Mustangs jumped out to an early 19-13 lead, but TCU (2-0) climbed back to post a 33-30 margin at the half. In a back-and-forth second half, SMU trailed 62-58 with under a minute remaining. In consecutive possessions, Haley Day and Christian each hit shots to bring the Mustangs back to tie the contest. After a missed shot by TCU's Helen Sverrisdottir, Alisha Filmore grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up the court. After crossing the half-court line, Filmore drew contact from the Horned Frog defense, but a controversial no-call turned the ball over to TCU.

In the first overtime, the teams traded baskets, but remained at a deadlock, 68-68, after five minutes. In the second overtime, SMU was left without three starters, Filmore (injury), Delisha Wills (fouls) and Haley Day (fouls), and TCU went on a 9-2 run to begin the period. Six Carter free throws helped lift the Frogs to the win.

Haley Day dished out a team-high five assists to go along with nine points and seven rebounds. The senior went 2-for-3 from the line and had two steals. Fellow senior Delisha Wills also helped fill out the stat sheet with eight boards, six points and three assists.

The Mustangs return to the court on Sunday with a game at UT San Antonio. Next weekend, the Ponies host the Hoops for the Cure Tournament at Moody Coliseum. SMU welcomes Georgia Southern, Akron and Arkansas State to the two-day tournament. For ticket information, call 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263).
