SMU-Akron Box Score
DALLAS (SMU) --- Five players scored in double figures as the SMU women's basketball (3-2) defeated Akron, 75-67, in the Hoops for the Cure Championship on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
"At this point in the season, you like to see improvement," said SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola. "We won two games this weekend against good opponents and I feel that it gives our team confidence heading forward."
Alisha Filmore led the scoring charge with a career-high 18 points, including a 4-of-6 performance from three-point range. The sophomore point guard added in a four assists and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Due to her strong play, Filmore was named to the all-tournament team.
"Teams had been playing off of Alisha and helping out down low," said Rompola. "Her making those threes makes us a more difficult team to defend."
For the second consecutive game, Delisha Wills posted a double-double. The senior led the team with 12 rebounds, scored 11 points and dished a team-high five assists.
Junior post Christine Elliott tied a season-high with 16 points, including 12 in the second half. For the second-straight game, Elliott led the team with two blocked shots.
Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Mustangs, Haley Day and Samantha Mahnesmith each added in 10 points. Mahnesmith, who was named the Hoops for the Cure MVP, sunk a three to extend the SMU lead to four after Akron (4-2) made a late run to bring the score within one point. After the junior's three-pointer brought the score to 71-67, the Mustangs closed the contest with four more points to seal the game and tournament championship.
"I was particularly proud of the way that we improved during the game with turnovers," said Rompola. "After having problems in the Arkansas State game, it's good to limit the turnovers to only 10, including only four in the second half."
SMU returns to the court on Dec. 1 to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7 p.m. at Moody Coliseum. For ticket information call 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-2463), or visit SMUMustangs.com.
