LAS VEGAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team dropped a close contest to South Florida, falling 61-55 to the Bulls in the second game of the BTI Classic in Las Vegas. The Mustangs (5-5) led 55-54 with just under two minutes left in the game, but the Bulls (9-4) held the Mustangs scoreless down the stretch to take the victory.
Delisha Wills (Mesquite, Texas) led the Mustangs with 13 points, and Haley Day (Rockwall, Texas) scored 12. Christine Elliott (Wichita, Kan.) grabbed 12 rebounds.
The Bulls led 35-29 at halftime, winning the battle beyond the arc. South Florida was 6-of-13 shooting from 3-point range in the first half, while the Mustangs made just one trey in the first 20 minutes. Raquel Christian (Midland, Texas) connected for three with 3:04 left in the first half, giving the Mustangs their first lead of the game, 26-24.
Christian led SMU at the break with eight points, going 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Haley Day scored six in the first half. SMU was just 11-for-31 from the field, while USF connected on 14-of-34 in the first half.
SMU quickly erased the deficit, opening the second half on a 10-1 run over the first four minutes. Delisha Wills led the charge, scoring her first six points of the game during the run to give SMU a 41-38 lead at the first media timeout of the half with 15:09 remaining in the game.
The Mustangs continued to pressure South Florida on the defensive end of the floor, holding the Bulls to just four points over the first eight minutes of the second half, stretching the lead to 44-39 with 11:54 left in the game.
A pair of 3-pointers by Andrea Smith put the Bulls in front 45-44, but Alisha Filmore (Mansfield, Texas) answered with her first three of the game to retake the lead 47-45 with 9:31 to play. The triple was just the second of the game by the Mustangs. The sophomore finished with seven points and six rebounds.
Andrell and Andrea Smith led South Florida with 13 points each, and Andrea grabbed 12 rebounds. The Bulls got to the line for just one free throw in the first half, but connected on 9-of-14 in the second half including three in the last 21 seconds to close out the win.
SMU will close out the BTI Classic Monday, taking on host UNLV at 9:30 P.M. CT.
