DALLAS (SMU) - Jillian Samuels led the Mustangs with 17 points and Christine Elliott grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs fell 73-67 to Houston Sunday in Moody Coliseum.
Samuels led a fast start by the Mustangs (16-8, 6-5 Conference USA), going 3-for-4 from 3-point range in the first eight minutes to open a 24-9 lead over the Cougars (13-11, 7-4 C-USA) with 12:16 left in the first half.
Houston took its first lead of the game with 7:40 left in the second half, and the Cougars held on at the end for the win.
Samuels finished 5-of-10 from the field, going 4-for-7 on 3-pointers for 17 points with three rebounds and two assists. Brittany Gilliam and Haley Day each scored 15 points, and Gilliam grabbed 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Day pulled down nine rebounds.
The Mustangs went 15-for-30 from the field in the first half, but made just 9-of-33 second half attempts, finishing the game shooting 38.1-percent.
SMU will go back on the road this week, taking on Tulsa Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla.
