SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team opened with a 10-under-par 278 on Wednesday and is tied for the lead after the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at Leilehua Golf Course. The No. 25 Mustangs share the lead with Cal at 10-under, followed by No. 23 UNLV (-9), Nevada (-7) and No. 5 Texas A&M (-3).
After one round, three Mustangs rank in the top 10 individually, led by Ben Tewes, who is tied for second at 4-under 68. Kelly Kraft is one shot back of Tewes in fifth at 69, while Matt Schovee's 70 has him tied for ninth. Max Buckley also ranks inside the top 20 at 1-under 71, good for 19th.
Cal's Stephen Hale leads the individual standings with a 7-under 65.
The 17-team tournament continues through Friday.
