DALLAS (SMU) - Brittany Gilliam posted her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, and Haley Day led the Mustangs with 22 points as SMU knocked off Southern Miss 81-66 Saturday in Moody Coliseum.
The Mustangs (19-9, 9-6 Conference USA) clinched a first-round bye in the 2010 GMC Sierra C-USA Championship March 8-12 in Tulsa, Okla. Southern Miss fell to 9-19, 5-10 C-USA, with the loss.
Day went 6-for-11 from the field and 8-for-11 from the free-throw line, and grabbed nine rebounds to go with her three steals. Jillian Samuels scored 15 points and handed out five assists, and Samantha Mahnesmith scored 10 points.
Heidi Brandenburg finished with 11 points and six rebounds, both career highs, giving the Mustangs five players in double-figures for the first time since Jan. 30 at Houston.
With the game tied 8-8 five minutes into the first half, the Mustangs went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-8 lead with 11:44 left until the break. SMU kept the pressure on, shooting 46.9-percent (15-for-32) from the field in the first half to take a 42-32 lead into the locker room.
SMU continued the accurate shooting, making 43.5-percent (10-of-23) to out-score the Golden Eagles 39-34 in the second half, eclipsing 80 points for the third time this season. The Mustangs never trailed in the game, and didn't let Southern Miss within eight points in the second half.
The Mustangs will close out the regular season at home against Tulsa Wednesday at 7 p.m. SMU will honor its three seniors, Brittany Gillian, Jillian Samuels and Alice Severin, in a pregame ceremony.
