BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (SMU) --- For the second straight day the SMU volleyball team defeated UAB, 3-0, at the Bartow Arena. With the win, the Mustangs advance to 10-3 on the season and 2-0 in Conference USA (C-USA) play.
Leading the attack, SMU outside hitter Dana Powell notched a double-double for the third consecutive match. The junior from Tulsa, Okla. registered 16 kills and 14 digs in her team-leading tenth double-double this season. Powell set a personal season-best with a .400 hitting percentage in the match. Junior Jessica Oliver joined Powell in converting on over .400 of attacks, finishing on 7-of-17 attempts (.412).
The Mustangs also received a strong performance from Kathryn Wilkerson, who is one of only six SMU athletes to notch 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills during a career. Wilkerson finished with 13 digs and 10 kills to tally her eighth double-double this season.
Libero Sidney Stewart led the Mustangs with 24 digs and helped SMU hold UAB (3-11, 0-2 C-USA) to a .099 attack percentage on the night. Freshman Meghan Janette finished with 13 digs of her own.
The Red-and-Blue notched 12 total team blocks with Courtney Manning and Kelli Becerra pacing the defense with eight and six block assists respectively.
The Mustangs move to 4-1 in three-set matches and 4-2 in away contests.
SMU continues C-USA play next weekend with two matches. On Friday, the Mustangs travel to face the Tulane Green Wave in New Orleans, La. SMU follows with its first home match since Sept. 4, when they host Southern Miss at Moody Coliseum on Sunday.
