DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU volleyball program raised nearly $1,000 for the Side-Out Foundation and breast cancer research during its 2011 Dig Pink campaign, but unfortunately, the event ended with a 3-1 loss to Tulane in Moody Coliseum Saturday.
Courtney Manning and Jessica Oliver posted their first double-doubles of the season, each blocking 11 attacks. Manning finished with a match-high 12 kills, while Oliver scored 10 kills. Dana Powell also recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 18 digs.
The Mustangs (6-12, 2-4 Conference USA) started strong, taking the first set 25-14. With the set tied 10-10, SMU overpowered Tulane (6-10, 1-4 C-USA) 15-4 to close out the set and take an early advantage.
The Green Wave overcame an early SMU lead in the second set to take an 18-12 lead. The Mustangs charged back, fighting off five set points before falling 25-23 to go into the lockerroom with the match tied 1-1.
After Tulane took the third set 25-20, the Green Wave broke a 16-16 tied in the fourth set with a 4-0 run to lead 20-16. The Mustangs rallied to cut the lead to one, 22-21, but eventually fell 25-22 to end the match.
SMU will face Tulane again Sunday in Moody Coliseum at 2 p.m. before returning to the road for three of its next four matches.
