Swim Teams Win Houston Invitational

HOUSTON (SMU) - The SMU men's and women's swimming and diving teams won the Houston Invitational this weekend. The women had a final score of 855, while the men finished with 1474 points. The teams combined to post 13 NCAA B standard times.

Senior captain Therese Svendsen won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.52. Sophomore Deanna Matthews took second, clocking in at 1:58.39, while freshman Isabella Arcila placed third in 1:58.41. All three times were NCAA B consideration times.

The women also swept honors in the 200-yard breaststroke, again earning three NCAA B qualifying times. Freshman Erica Donadon won the event, touching the wall in 2:13.24. Senior Raminta Dvariskyte was second and freshman Rachel Nicol was third, finishing in 2:13.69 and 2:14.47, respectively.

Sophomore Nina Rangelova took gold in the 100-yard freestyle (49.73), narrowly edging senior Genny Konicke (49.78). Both Mustangs earned NCAA B standards.

Senior Denisa Smolenova placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.56 (NCAA B).

SMU finished the competition by earning big points in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Arcila, Konicke, Emily Vavourakis and Rangelova took first (3:19.63), while Eleonor Lindborg, Svendsen, Smolenova and Donadon were third (3:24.03). Both squads swam the event in NCAA B standards.

For the men, junior Mindaugas Sadauskas earned another NCAA B time, swimming the 100-yard freestyle in 43.90. Sophomore Ryan Koops was second with a time of 45.43.

Sophomore Matt Roney took top honors in the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.23), topping teammate Blaz Korosec (1:51.33).

Richard Cornelius won the platform dive with a final score of 285.95.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, newcomer Nicolai Hansen placed second, clocking in at 2:04.85. Sophomore Matthew Napier-Jameson was third with a time of 2:08.10.

Freshman Paolo Stanchi took third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.63).

The Mustang relay squad of Hansen, Koops, Giedrius Andriunaitis and Sadauskas posted an NCAA B time of 2:58.81 en route to first-place finish. Korosec, Roney, Gabriel Andonie and Madison Mulleady earned important points finishing third in the event with a time of 3:09.03.
