SMU Season Stats
STANFORD, Calif. (SMU) - The No. 28 SMU Women's Team (5-2) dropped just their second dual match of the young spring season to No. 1 and undefeated Stanford, 7-0, at the Taube Family Tennis Center on Thursday. The defeated marked only the second time in the last 56 regular season matches that the Mustangs failed to register a point.
"I thought we came out flat in doubles and you just can't do that against a team as talented as Stanford," said head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner. "I was happy with how we regrouped and fought hard in singles. We can learn from playing tough competition like this and now we just have to regroup and rest up for two more tough matches on Sunday."
The Mustangs fell behind early as the Stanford claimed the doubles point by earning victories at all three positions, each by a score of 6-2.
In singles play, the Mustangs fought hard against a top-ranked Cardinal lineup that features five nationally-ranked players.
Mara Lesniak, the nation's second-ranked player, had her toughest battle of the spring season but ultimately fell to No. 5 Hilary Barte at the top singles line, 6-4, 7-6.
At No. 2, Edyta Cieplucha fell to No. 80 Nicole Gibbs in a hard-fought three-set battle, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Heather Steinbauer fell at the third line to No. 23 Kristie Ahn, 6-2, 6-2, while Shahzoda Hatamova gave No. 31 Mallory Burdette all she could handle, but was eventually downed 7-5, 7-5.
Rounding out singles, Aleksandra Malyarchikova suffered her first loss of the spring falling to No. 47 Stacy Tan, 6-4, 7-6, and Ashley Turpin was ousted by Carolyn McVeigh, 6-3, 6-1.
The win for Stanford extended their NCAA-record home winning streak to 169 consecutive matches (137 regular season, 32 NCAA Tournament)- a streak that spans nearly 12 seasons and is recognized as the longest active home winning streak among all sports in Division I athletics. The Cardinal has not lost at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium since a 5-4 setback against No. 4 California back on Feb. 27, 1999.
SMU is back in action this Sunday, February 13th when it plays host to both Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisville at the Turpin Tennis Center on the campus of SMU. First serve for the match with ULL is set for 9 a.m., while the clash with Louisville is set for 1:00 p.m.
