SMU-UCLA Box Score
LOS ANGELES (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team fought valiantly Friday night, ultimately coming out on the losing end of a 1-0 result against No. 6 UCLA at Drake Stadium.
It didn't take long for the Bruins (5-0-1) to score the lone goal of the match. UCLA All-American Sydney Leroux made something out of nothing, breaking past a pair of SMU defenders before slotting a left-footed shot past senior goalkeeper Courtney Webb in the 10th minute.
Junior Mallory Baum nearly tied up the match in the 27th minute, forcing UCLA's freshman keeper, Katelyn Rowland into a great save as the ball was headed for the top corner.
Despite UCLA controlling the possession for the much of the game, the Mustang attack came to life late in the first half, putting the Bruin defense on its heels. With UCLA's strong possession game, SMU ultimately was unable to find the equalizer in the second half.
"This is a tough place to play," said SMU head coach Brent Erwin. "UCLA is No. 6 for a reason, but our girls fought like crazy. They just kept battling, but we were just always short on getting that break that would provide us a really good chance on goal."
Like last season at No. 5 Portland, the Mustangs were under relentless pressure throughout the game, but SMU's defense stood tall and thwarted off chance after chance by the home side. Webb produced a pair of key saves when called upon to keep hope alive for the Mustangs, while recording a season-high six stops on the night.
"What I think we showed tonight is that we can go toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the country, on the road no less," Erwin said. "We can take the lessons from this and apply them to the rest of our games."
SMU (3-3-0) completes its trip to Southern California on Sunday as the team heads to Loyola Marymount. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT, at Sullivan Field.
Season tickets are $24. Individual game tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Blocks of 50 or more tickets are $1 apiece. Tickets can be purchased online at SMUMustangs.com or by calling 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263).
