NEW ORLEANS, LA. - Ricky Tarrant scored 33 points as Tulane overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat SMU 80-74 Wednesday night. SMU (10-10, 2-4) led 25-17 at the half before Tulane (14-6, 2-4) exploded for 63 second half points to pick up the win.
Robert Nyakundi led the Mustangs with 26 points going 4-of-6 from the 3-point line, while Jeremiah Samarrippas recorded a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 assists on the night. London Giles and Jalen Jones both scored in double-digits for the Mustangs, with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
The Mustangs shot 58% from the field in the first half to build a 25-17 lead and a Nyakundi three-pointer early in the second half widened the SMU lead to 28-19. Tulane then caught fire shooting 64% from the field and 64% from the three-point line after a dismal first half of shooting. The Green Wave had ended the first half shooting just 26% from the field and had recorded just one first half three-point basket on 15 attempts before catching fire in the high scoring second half.
Tulane built an 11-point lead at 66-55 with 4:16 to go in the game but the Mustangs rallied to cut the Tulane lead to four after Jones connected on a three-point bucket at the 2:34 mark. Tulane pulled away down the stretch, however, to secure the win. SMU shot 57% from the field for the game.
The Mustangs return home to Moody Coliseum for their next game this Saturday, Jan. 28 against Tulsa. The C-USA battle will be televised on FSN. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. and tickets are available online at smumustangs.com/tickets.
