NACOGDHOCHES, Texas (SMU) - After trailing at the beginning of the first half, SMU pulled away from the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks to win 81-69 in Nacogdoches, Texas, on Saturday evening. SMU is now 5-0 on the season, marking the third time in program history that it has achieved that mark.

SMU senior Keena Mays finished with 26 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, just one board and two helpers shy of generating the first triple-double in program history. Akil Simpson tallied her second straight double-double, posting 20 points with 12 rebounds. The duo became the first pair to score 20 points each for SMU since Mays and Alisha Filmore scored 26 and 21 respectively on Feb. 3 at UTEP.

After trailing early in the first half, SMU took its first lead at the 10:33 mark off a Kiara Perry jumper in the lane from an inbounds from Korina Baker underneath the basket. The two squads would trade the lead for much of the rest of the frame, but SMU did begin to create some distance toward the end of the half. Mays would put an exclaimation point on the period with a successful jumper while getting fouled with 1.1 seconds left. After the senior converted the free throw, SMU entered the break with a 41-35 advantage.

The game would stay within eight points for much of the second half, with Stephen F. Austin picking up timely buckets right as it would seem SMU was about to go on a run. The Lumberjacks were able to make it a one-score game at the 9:44 mark with a three-pointer to cut SMU's lead to 59-56. The Mustangs responded with a 12-2 run over the next few minutes, capped off by three from Mays at the 5:08 mark to give SMU its first 10-point lead, 71-61.

The Lumberjacks started the game four of five from three-point land, but only made one of their next eight in the first half, shooting just six-of-22 from the field over the last 14 minutes of the frame. SMU turned in its best free throw shooting performance of the season, going 25-of-29 (86.2 percent) from the charity stripe. Simpson led the way from the line, making all eight of her attempts.

Destynee Hives-McCray scored 13 points, while Gabrielle Wilkins added seven points with four assists and two steals.

The Mustangs will play their next game at home on Monday against Lamar at 6 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas.
