SAN MARCOS, Texas (SMU) - The SMU volleyball team swept Quinnipiac to take the first match of the season and the first between the two schools. Sophomore Abbey Bybel led the Mustangs with nine kills, and sophomore Avery Acker had 30 assists with six digs and five kills to open the Texas State Classic with a win.
The SMU freshmen played big roles in the win, as well. Janelle Giordano finished with eight kills, and Morgan Heise recorded a match-high seven digs and had four assists. Junior Caroline Young scored eight kills and two blocks. The Mustangs hit .471 as a team, scoring 41 kills in 68 attempts, and held the Bobcats to just 13 kills in 58 attempts.
SMU closed out the match in the third set with a 25-14 win. Quinnipiac took its first lead of the match at 3-2 in the third. The Bobcats held the lead 11-10 before the Mustangs went on a 10-0 run to take a 21-10 lead with seven kills and two aces during the stretch. Young scored five of her eight kills during the final set.
The Mustangs took advantage of six errors by the Bobcats to take a 9-2 lead in the second set, and held Quinnipiac to just 10 points to win 25-10 and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the first match of the year. Acker led the attack with five kills and had the assist on the other eight of SMU's 13 kills in the set. Bybel and Maddie Lozano each had four kills in the first set, leading the Mustangs to a 25-15 victory. With the score tied 4-4, SMU rallied to win the next seven for an 11-4 lead.
SMU will play Texas State tonight at 6:30 p.m. and close out the tournament Saturday against Lamar at 10 a.m. Texas State beat Lamar 3-0 in each teams' first match of the tournament.
