WACO, Texas (SMU) - The Mustangs lost the last two sets by a combined five points as Baylor picked up the victory over SMU in its first home match of the season (25-17, 27-25, 25-22). Caroline Young scored 11 kills to lead the Mustangs, reaching double-digits for the second time in four matches, but it wasn't enough to bring the Mustangs back against the Bears.
Cailin Bula came off the bench in the second set and finished with eight kills, hitting .615, and freshman Janelle Giordano scored seven kills. Morgan Heise, also a freshman, finished with 14 digs, and Avery Acker recorded 33 assists.
The Mustangs kept the score within striking distance the entire third set, but leading 17-16, the Bears stretched the lead to three. SMU was unable to get within two the rest of the set, and Baylor took the win 25-22, improving to 1-3 while SMU fell to 2-2.
SMU fell behind 21-15 in the second set on a 12-7 Baylor run, which broke an 8-8 tie. The Mustangs scored the next five points, three on kills by Bula, to cut the lead to one. After the Bears broke the streak, taking a 22-20 lead, SMU took its first lead since the score was 7-6 with three straight points. The Mustangs had the first two chances to win the set, but Baylor took a 2-0 lead after scoring three straight to win 27-25.
The Bears defended their home court in the team's first match in the Ferrell Center this season, hitting .520 for a 25-17 victory and an early advantage in the match. SMU trailed by just two midway through the set, 15-13, but Baylor went on a 7-2 run to take a 22-15 lead on its way to winning the first set.
The Mustangs host Grambling for the home opener in the Dedman Center Friday at 12:30 in the first round of the SMU Classic. Sam Houston State and Davidson will also compete in the two-day tournament. The SMU volleyball program will host a "Meet The Mustangs" event Wed. at 4 p.m. in the Dedman Center leading up to the tournament.
