Oct. 14, 2014 AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) - The SMU women's golf team finished the Betsy Rawls Invitational in fourth place Tuesday. As a team, the Mustangs shot 36-over (900, 286-313-301) to finish five strokes off co-champions UNLV and Tulane at the University of Texas Golf Club.
"We played very well the front nine," Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "However we just did not bring it in. I told the team we were right where we wanted to be in the back nine; playing for the championship. We need to work on closing it off but I think we still played very well."
Jenny Haglund had her third top 10 finish of the year after carding 5-over (221, 70-78-73) for the tournament. She finished tied with four others for sixth place. Her final round of 1-over 73 tied the lowest for SMU with Lindsey McCurdy.
Alexandra Rossi took 10th after carding 6-over (222, 66-78-78) for the event. Her lone birdie of the day came on the challenging 17th hole. Rossi had the third most birdies over the 54-holes with 10.
McCurdy had her first collegiate top 20 finish at 10-over (226, 74-79-73) for 16th place. Her round began strong with back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes. Through the front nine she was 2-under but three bogeys on the back nine left her at 1-over for the round.
"Like I have been saying, Lindsey is getting better each week," Sutherland said. "She played the course well and scored when we needed it. She has been making strides in her game."
Concluding the SMU team score was Jennifer Park, who ended in a tie for 36th after shooting 231 (76-78-77) for the invitational. Katie Page shot 89 in her final round and ended the event at 254 (84-81-89).
Alex Celli, competing as an individual, closed the event with an 81. She shot 252 (82-89-81) over the three-day tournament.
UNLV and Tulane shared the tournament title at 31-over. Baylor trailed by three strokes (+34) and the Mustangs followed in fourth.
SMU will have a two-week hiatus before playing in their last fall tournament. The Mustangs begin play at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club for the UTSA-hosted Alamo Invitational on Oct. 26.
