Live Scoring/Tee Times DALLAS (SMU) - The 20th-ranked SMU Mustangs finished two rounds at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Monday, ending the day in 11th overall at the recently-renovated Royal Oaks Country Club.
SMU struggled much of the day on the new course with challenging conditions. Only six of the 72 players in the field shot at par or better over the first two rounds.
"Good teams have bad days, and that was us today," SMU head coach Jason Enloe said. "We just need to stick to the game plan."
Freshman Ben Baxter is SMU's top player on the leaderboard, sitting in a tie for 20th after carding a 1-under 71 in his second round to finish Monday at 5-over. Baxter was SMU's lone golfer to shoot an under-par round.
Enloe and his team were disappointed with their results on Monday, but are encouraged knowing that tomorrow is a new day and that there are still positions left to be gained on the scoreboard.
"The course played very difficult today and we didn't play well," Enloe said. "We gave away too many shots and our short game wasn't great. Everybody needs to do everything better tomorrow."
Junior Bryson Dechambeau and freshman Gray Townsend are each tied for 43rd overall. Townsend posted SMU's low score of the first round with a 1-over 73 in the morning.
No. 21 Oklahoma State leads the tournament, with No. 8 Baylor, No. 25 Oklahoma, No. 18 New Mexico and Houston rounding out the top five.
SMU will tee off at 8:35 a.m. tomorrow, grouped with Minnesota and Duke.
