NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) - The SMU women's golf team sits in second place after the first round of the Schooner Fall Classic at the Belmar Golf Club. The Mustangs shot a 282 (+2) on the first of three days at the Oklahoma-hosted tournament.

"We played well today," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "We started off on the easier half of the course when the wind was light. We got some shots in the bank, which definitely helped. Our short game picked us up on the other nine when the wind picked up. We made a lot of big putts and that was the difference in our round."

The Mustangs had two golfers who shot par-or-better highlighted by Katie Page's 2-under 68. Page's lowest round of the year has her in a tie for third in the field of 91.

"Katie played great golf," Sutherland said. "She hit greens and had 25 putts, which is very efficient play. I knew it was going to happen when she started hitting greens. She has been putting great and it was nice to see them go down for birdies today."

Jenny Haglund shot an even-par 70, which has her in a tie for 11th. A stroke behind Haglund is Jennifer Park (+1, T-22nd) and she is followed by Alexandra Rossi (+3, T-35th).

"Everyone played pretty well," Sutherland said. "It was a great start to a great event. Anytime we travel to Oklahoma we know it can be breezy. We worked hard on our short game and it paid off. Whatever the last two rounds bring, we should be prepared."

Rounding out SMU's lineup is Lindsey McCurdy who shot an 83 on the opening day.

Leading the 17-team field is Mississippi State after they carded a 277 (-3). The Bulldogs have the top two on the individual leader board with 3-under rounds from Jessica Peng and Ally McDonald.

The Mustangs hold a one stroke lead in team standings over Texas A&M and LSU.

Play continues on the 6,082-yard, par-70 course on Sunday.
