Oct. 5, 2014 Live Scoring
ERIN, Wis. (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs ended day one at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate in third place, behind only No. 10 UCLA and host Marquette at the Erin Hills Golf Club on Sunday. Junior Bryson Dechambeau and freshman Ben Baxter both finished the opening round in the top 10 individually.
Dechambeau finished the day with an even-par 72, one of only five players in the field to post a score of par or better on a day where temperatures were in the 50s and tee times were delayed due to frost. Baxter carded a 2-over par 74 to continue his strong start to his freshman campaign.
"The guys hung in there today under extremely difficult conditions," SMU head coach Jason Enloe said. "Ben and Bryson did great and I'm confident the others will come back tomorrow with good performances."
Sophomore Andrew Buchanan finished at 4-over par to give SMU another player in the top 20 of the 66-player field. Overall, the Mustangs posted a team score of 301 with junior Maxime Blandin's score counting toward the total. SMU is two strokes behind Marquette in second and seven shots behind 10th-ranked UCLA in the lead. Wisconsin and Northwestern are tied for fourth.
UCLA's Lorens Chan leads at 2-under par, with Ron Jacobsen of Wisconsin close behind at 1-under. Dechambeau, Manav Shah (UCLA) and Joshua Jamieson (Northwestern)
SMU will be grouped with UCLA and Marquette with an opening tee time of 9:20 a.m. CT for the second round tomorrow.
