Mustangs Take Seventh Place At Schooner Fall Classic

Oct. 6, 2014

RESULTS

NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) - The SMU women's golf team had its lowest team score (279, -1) of the Schooner Fall Classic Monday to take seventh place at the Belmar Golf Club. The Mustangs put together an 845 (+5, 282-284-279) total for the 54-hole event.

"I thought we played good golf today," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "We began on the tough front nine and played solid down the line. There was not a bad team in this field so I am proud of how we did. Some of the best teams in the country were here and we played with them."

Junior Jenny Haglund shot 1-under on the day for a tournament score of 205 (-5, 70-66-69), which put her in a tie for fourth place.

"I am happy for Jenny," Sutherland said. "She did everything well all weekend. I was pleased how well she was driving the ball and her putting. Her approach was great and she finished ahead of some really great golfers."

It was the best finish for Haglund through three tournaments this season. Her only blemish on the final day was a bogey on 18. Nonetheless, she was one stroke off of Mississippi State's Chieh Jessica Peng (-6) for third place and four off of Baylor's Haley Davis (-9) in second. Ally McDonald of Mississippi State claimed the individual title at 13-under.

Senior Jennifer Park ended the event even-par (210, 71-71-68). She ended in a six-way tie for 15th, which is also her best finish in a tournament this fall.

"Jennifer had a solid tournament," Sutherland said. "Her game and scores are starting to match. By that I mean when she plays well, her scores are low."

Katie Page had SMU's third best finish after posting a 76 (+6) on the final round. Her six-over (216, 68-72-76) score placed her 43rd in the field.

Alexandra Rossi had her best round of the tournament by carding an even-par 70. Overall she was nine-over (219, 73-75-72). Rounding out the Mustangs was Lindsey McCurdy who carded a 230 (83-75-72) over the three-day tournament.

"The entire group finished well," Sutherland said. "We do need to work on par 5's. We cannot give up shots, but rather we should fight for birdies instead of pars. I loved the effort from the entire lineup. It was a good weekend for us."

Only three of the 17 teams finished under-par for the weekend. Runaway leader Mississippi State (-22) claimed the tournament title by 19 strokes. Arkansas (-3) took second and Texas A&M (-2) followed in third. Kent State (+2) claimed fourth, UCF (+3) finished in fifth and Cal (+4) finished in front of the Mustangs in sixth.

SMU returns to action Oct. 12 for the Betsy Rawls Invitational. The Texas-hosted tournament will be played on the University of Texas Golf Course.
