HOUSTON (SMU) -
On the second day of play at the Houston Invitational, the SMU women's tennis
team earned four total wins, two in singles and two in doubles, on Saturday.
SMU was paired with Iowa State for Saturday's action. In singles, sophomores Anna Kate Anderson and
Macie Elliott recorded victories for the Mustangs. Anderson stayed unbeaten in singles, earning
an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win over Ana Gasparovic.
Elliott defeated Carolina Andersen in two sets; 6-4, 6-2. Junior Hristina Dishkova fell to Sami Budai;
6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Dasha Sharapova
dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Ksenia Pronina.
Sophomore Mary Wright was edged by Alejandra Galvis; 6-2, 7-6. Junior Vaszilisza Bulgakova dropped a
thrilling three-set match to Meghan Cassens; 3-6, 6-4, 12-10.
In doubles, Bulgakova and Sharapova stayed perfect on the
weekend, toppling Budai and Pronina, 8-5.
Junior Yana Erkeeva and Wright also earned a doubles victory for the
Mustangs, defeating Cassens and Gasparovic, 8-7 (5). SMU's only doubles loss was an 8-4 defeat
suffered by Anderson and Elliott to Iowa State's Andersen and Galvis.
The invitational concludes tomorrow, with play starting at 9
a.m. CT.
