Mustangs Finish Third At NCAA Regional

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (SMU) - The SMU women's cross country team finished third at the NCAA South Central Regional on Friday at the Agri Park Cross Country Park, narrowly missing out on an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The top two teams earn an automatic bid to the national title race.
Sophomore Agnes Sjöström advanced to the NCAA Championship as an individual, as she finished third overall in the 142-runner field. Sjöström's time of 20:11.0 was not only a personal best, but was the second-fastest 6K time in school history. Silje Fjortoft holds the SMU record with a 19:58.1 set in 2011.
Juniors Shanoah Souza, Holly Archer and Melanie Stemper all clocked top-30 finishes for the Mustangs. Souza finished 15th with a time of 20:45.0, a new personal record. Archer placed 27th (21:10.2) and Stemper crossed the finish line 30th (21:28.2).
For their top-25 finishes, Sjostrom and Souza were named to the NCAA All-Region team.
Fellow junior Karoline Skatteboe rounded out the SMU top five, placing 39th (21:36.0). Junior Claire Trotter and sophomore Julie Vanderhout also competed for the Mustangs. Trotter finished 96th (23:00.9), a new personal best, and Vanderhout placed 101st (23:09.0).
Host Arkansas, ranked fourth in the country, won the regional and Razorback junior Domonique Scott won the individual title for the second consecutive year. No. 21 Baylor finished second and advanced to the national title race, finishing 31 points ahead of the Mustangs.
The NCAA Championship will take place on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. CT in Terre Haute, Indiana. SMU will have an opportunity to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship. Selections will be announced tomorrow by 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.
