PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) - The SMU men's swimming and diving team swept the weekly conference awards, as Devin Burnett was named American Athletic Conference Diver of the Week and Sam Straughan was named Swimmer of the Week, league officials announced on Tuesday.
Burnett, a senior, won both the one-meter and three-meter dives in SMU's dual meet with TCU on Wednesday, Nov. 12. The Plano, Texas, native posted a first-place score of 362.78 in the one-meter and then won the three-meter with a score of 365.85. In both events, Burnett finished over 50 points ahead of the second-place finisher. Both scores met qualifying standards for the NCAA Zone Diving competition.
Straughan, a junior transfer from Loughborough Univeristy (U.K.), also earned two first-place finishes against TCU. The Maidenhead, United Kingdom, native won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.73 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.54. Both of Straughan's times are the fastest in that event in The American so far this season.
The Mustangs return to the pool this week for the Texas A&M Invitational beginning on Thursday, Nov. 20.
