DALLAS (SMU) - The Mustangs won the fourth set 29-27 to take a 3-1 victory against Temple (25-18, 20-25, 25-19, 29-27) to climb into a second-place tie in the American Athletic Conference with a 13-5 conference record, 24-6 overall. Temple dropped to 22-8 overall, 13-5 in The American.
In the fourth set, SMU took a 6-1 lead for the second straight set, but Temple came all the way back, cutting the lead to one, 11-10. The Owls took their first lead of the set, 15-14, after scoring back-to-back points, and stretched the lead to three, 19-16. SMU scored three unanswered to tie the score, and the two teams traded points before SMU scored the final two points for the victory.
Cailin Bula led the team with a career-high 19 kills, and senior Caroline Young scored 14 to give the Mustangs a win on Senior Day. Young also had 12 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Avery Acker had 61 assists, one shy of her career-high 62 against New Mexico this season, and 14 digs for her league-best 25th double-double.
Abbey Bybel also recorded her 13th double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs. Janelle Giordano finished with 11 kills and six blocks, and senior Julianne Scheidler tallied 13 digs. SMU scored 68 kills as a team, and recorded 91 digs with 11.0 blocks. The Mustangs held Temple to 47 kills and a .144 attack percentage.
The Mustangs scored eight of the last nine points to win the first set 25-18. SMU went on a 5-2 run to take an 11-6 lead early in the set, and the advantage was still four, 15-11, before the Owls battled back to tie the score, 16-16. SMU took a timeout, and each team scored a point after the break before the final run by the Mustangs. Bula had six kills to lead the offense for SMU.
Temple took a 17-8 lead in the second set, and held off the Mustangs late to even the match, 1-1. SMU scored four straight to cut the lead to 4, 17-13, and got to within three, 20-17, but the Owls held on to win the set 25-20. Each team had 26 digs, but the Owls recorded nine blocks, holding SMU to a .073 attack percentage. The Mustangs lost the set despite scoring 16 kills to Temple's nine.
SMU answered in the third set, taking a 15-8 lead en route to a 25-19 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. The Mustangs came out of the intermission and scored six of the first seven points, and never trailed in the third set. SMU led by as many as eight points, and never led the Owls within four points after taking a 10-5 lead. Heise had eight digs in the set, and Young led the offense with five kills. Temple hit just .065 with nine kills to SMU's 15.
The Mustangs play their final home match Wednesday against Tulsa at 2 p.m. in Moody Coliseum. SMU concludes the regular season Friday at East Carolina.
