SAN MARTIN, Calif. (SMU) - The No. 20 SMU Mustangs men's golf team carded an even-par 355 in the second round of the Gifford Collegiate on Tuesday, improving by 16 shots over their first round total and moving up two positions on the leaderboard to seventh overall.
Junior Austin Smotherman ended the round in fifth place individually, shooting a 2-under 69 with five birdies in the second round. Smotherman was on fire to end the round, posting three straight birdies on holes 6-8 after beginning his day on the back nine.
Fellow junior Bryson Dechambeau also carded a 2-under 69, totaling four birdies against two bogeys. With his under par round, DeChambeau moved into a tie for 18th overall at 1-over heading into tomorrow.
Freshman Gray Townsend tallied an even-par 71 after notching birdies on his last two holes. Sophomore Andrew Buchanan and freshman Ben Baxter shot scores of 72 and 74, respectively, to produce the last two counting scores for SMU. Junior Maxime Blandin carded a 4-over 75 while sophomore Alex Higgs posted a 76 as an individual competitor.
SMU head coach Jason Enloe was excited about how his team responded after a tough first day at CordeValle, and is anticipating another strong effort tomorrow.
"I was pleased with our effort and our focus today," Enloe said. "We were much more into the round. We shot a good score today, but left a few shots out there. I was very happy with how all the guys finished their rounds off today. I hope for another solid day tomorrow to end the fall."
No. 22 USC continues to lead the tournament at 12-under. No. 6 UCLA is three shots back at 9-under, with no other teams under par. Northwestern, No. 14 Stanford and No. 4 Texas round out the top five. SMU's even-par round was the fourth-lowest team score of the day, bringing the Mustangs (16-over) within five shots of a top five finish tomorrow.
SMU will play its last round of the fall season tomorrow, starting with a shotgun start on holes 10-14 at 10 a.m. CT tomorrow. The Mustangs will be grouped with Colorado and Wisconsin for the final round.
