The SMU Mustangs conclude a seven-game homestand on Wednesday by hosting UIC at 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum. SMU extended its winning streak to four games following an 80-73 overtime victory against UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 8. SMU is 6-1 at home this season and has won 24 of its last 26 home games, including 18 of 20 in the renovated Moody Coliseum.
UP NEXT: After a full month of home games, SMU is back on the road at Michigan on Dec. 20. The game will be on ESPN2/WatchESPN at 12 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. CT. Following a holiday break, the Mustangs wrap up non-conference play by hosting Midwestern State on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. The game will be on ESPN3/WatchESPN at 7 p.m. American Athletic Conference play begins Dec. 31 when SMU hosts USF at 4 p.m. That game will be on ESPN2.
LAST GAME (W, 80-73 OT, vs. UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 8, 2014): DALLAS (AP) - Keith Frazier scored a career-high 20 points and Yanick Moreira added 15 as SMU needed overtime to hold off upset-minded UC Santa Barbara 80-73 on Dec 8, 2014. Nic Moore, SMU's leading scorer, went out with a bruised right knee with 17:12 remaining in regulation and the Mustangs leading 46-36. The Gauchos quickly made an 18-3 run for their first lead 57-56 with 5:22 left. SMU retook the lead on Moreira's layup with 4:08 left and held the advantage until Gabe Vincent nailed a 3 with 10 seconds left to tie the score at 67 and force overtime. SMU's Ben Emelogu hit a jump shot with 1:44 left in the extra period for a 75-69 lead. The Mustangs then made five free throws to seal the win. Cannen Cunningham had 10 points and 10 rebounds for SMU (6-3).
Nic Moore UP FOR NAISMITH TROPHY AND WOODEN AWARD: Nic Moore was named to the 2015 Naismith Trophy Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Dec. 3. The award recognizes the top Men's College Basketball Player of the Year. Moore, is averaging team-bests in scoring (14.3), assists (5.1) and steals (1.8). A Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team selection, Moore is shooting 47.4 percent from behind the arc. He has been named to the AAC weekly Honor Roll twice, most recently on Dec. 8 for scoring a season-high 25 points with 4 assists over [RV/RV] Wyoming. The Atlanta Tipoff Club will announce the Midseason 30 on Feb. 12, 2015. On Nov. 17, Moore was named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The Wooden Award National Advisory Board will select 25 players for the midseason list in early January.
AWARDS: Nic Moore has been named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 (Nov. 17) and the Naismith Trophy 50 Watch List (Dec. 3). Nic Moore and and Markus Kennedy were selected unanimous preseason All-American Athletic Conference by the league's coaches. SMU also has four weekly honor roll selections from The American; Nic Moore twice (12/1, 12/8), Ben Moore (11/17) and Keith Frazier (12/15). THE SERIES VS. ILLINOIS-CHICAGO (1-0): SMU won the first meeting with UIC last season. Nic Moore had 20 points in a 73-65 SMU victory in Chicago.
LAST MEETING VS. ILLINOIS-CHICAGO (W, 73-65, at UIC on Dec. 4, 2013): CHICAGO (AP) - Nic Moore scored 20 points and dished out seven assists to lead SMU to a 73-65 win over the University of Illinois-Chicago on Dec 4, 2013. The win was NCAA career win No. 200 for Mustang head coach Larry Brown. Markus Kennedy added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Mustangs. Ten Mustangs scored in the first half and 11 reached the scoring column for the game. SMU shot 54.2 percent from the floor. SMU jumped to a 12-0 lead, taking advantage of a rusty UIC team that hadn't played in a week. The Flames battled back to tie the game three separate times in the second half, but SMU found an answer each time UIC tried to seize momentum. More often than not, Moore was that answer. Four of Moore's six second-half field goals came with SMU leading by at least two points. Two were 3-pointers. The undersized Flames also struggled to find an answer for 6-foot-11 Yanick Moreira, who scored the Mustangs' first six points, cleaning up on the offensive glass. Moreira finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

THE SERIES VS. MIDWESTERN STATE (1-0): SMU won the first meeting with Midwestern State on Dec. 17, 1966. The Mustangs won 89-74 behind 25 points from Denny Holman.
LAST MEETING VS. MIDWESTERN STATE (W, 89-74, vs. Midwestern State on Dec. 17, 1966): SMU shot 53.5% in a 89-74 win over Midwestern State on Dec. 19, 1966. Senior Denny Holman led all scorers with 25 points on 10 of 19 shooting. Senior Charles Beasley added 21 points and 9 rebounds while Sophomore Lynn Phillips had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Midwestern shot 45.6% and had three scorers in double-digits.
THE SERIES VS. USF (3-3): SMU is 3-3 against USF. Last season, the Mustangs and Bulls split its series with SMU winning 71-54 in Dallas but falling 78-71 in Tampa. Prior to last year, USF won back-to-back season openers in 2008 and 2009. SMU won the first two games in the series, 79-65 at home on Dec. 6, 1986 and 87-66 at USF on Dec. 14, 1987. The Mustangs are 2-1 against USF at home.
LAST MEETING VS. USF (L, 78-71, at USF on Jan. 28, 2014): TAMPA (AP) - Victor Rudd scored 21 points and Chris Perry tied a career high with 18, leading South Florida to a 78-71 victory against SMU on Jan. 28. Corey Allen Jr. also finished with 18 for South Florida, which made its last 15 free throws to seal the victory. Nic Moore scored 23 points to lead SMU (16-5, 5-3), which was outscored in the paint for the first time this season (38-28). Ben Moore and Markus Kennedy each had 11 points and Nick Russell added 10 for the Mustangs. The loss for SMU ended a five-game winning streak that began with a 71-54 rout of USF in Dallas.
HALL OF FAME HEAD COACH Larry Brown: He was named head men's basketball coach at SMU on April 19, 2012. He is the only head coach to win both an NCAA title (Kansas 1988) and an NBA Championship (Detroit 2004). Brown was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach on Sept. 27, 2002. He is in his 40th season as a head coach and 10th at the NCAA level. He has an overall record of 1702-1222 when combining his head coaching marks from the NBA, the ABA, the NCAA and USA Basketball. His collegiate record is 225-91 (48-30 at SMU), making the NCAA tournament in his first seven seasons including three Final Fours (1980, 1986, 1988) and the 1988 NCAA title. At SMU, he led the Mustangs to the 2014 NIT title game.

20 WIN PLATEAU: Last season, SMU reached the 20-win mark for the 10th time in program history, and the first time since they went 20-15 in the 2010-11 campaign. #22/22: SMU was ranked No. 22 in the preseason in both the AP and USA Today Coaches Top 25. It was the Mustangs' first preseason ranking since being No. 10 in the AP poll prior to the 1984-85 season. In 2013-14 SMU was in the top 25 in four of the last five regular season polls, being ranked for the first time since 1984-85. SMU finished tied for third in the inaugural season of the American Athletic Conference, going 12-6 with two wins over NCAA Champion Connecticut. The Mustangs tied for the third-best single-season turnaround in the nation last year with a 12-win improvement (15-17 in 2012-13).
2014 NIT FINAL: In SMU's second season under Larry Brown, it went 27-10 en route to the NIT championship game. SMU earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT, winning home games over UC Irvine (68-54), LSU (80-67) and California (67-65 on Nic Moore 3-pointer w/ 6.5 seconds left) to reach the semifinals in Madison Square Garden. SMU defeated Clemson 65-59 in the semifinal before falling to Minnesota (65-63) in the title game.
ATTENDANCE INCREASE - #4 NATIONALLY IN 2013-14, #2 SINCE 2012: SMU had the fourth-largest increase in attendance in 2013-14 and ranks second nationally in increased attendance since 2012. In 2013-14, SMU averaged 5,653 fans per home game, an increase of 2,210 over the previous season. The Mustangs are up 3,640 per home game since 2012. SMU went 18-1 at home last season including a 12-1 mark in Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs set a new season attendance record at 107,412, which included nine sellouts in 13 games at Moody. SMU ranked No. 12 nationally for increased attendance 2012-13, going from 2,013 in 2011-12 to 3,443. SMU and Iowa are the only two programs to be in the top 20 in each of the past two seasons. COACHING FOR LITERACY (CoachingForLiteracy.org): Jonathan Wilfong (SMU sophomore) and Andrew Renshaw, two then-high school seniors from Memphis, Tennessee, founded Coaching for Literacy in 2012. The premise is simple: a participant offers a monetary donation and, in exchange, gets to be the "Assistant Coach" during a sporting event. Proceeds raised from the event go towards funding effective literacy programs focused on helping elementary and middle school students. Coaching for Literacy partners with collegiate and professional sports teams for a unique game-day experience. --- The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate and the social problems associated with illiteracy. By leveraging the unique power of collegiate and professional sports, Coaching for Literacy raises money to support effective local literacy programs and schools focused on educating elementary and middle school students. SMU is hosting CFL events on 1/31/15 vs. UCF and 2/19/15 vs. Temple.
CRASHING THE GLASS: SMU has outrebounded 8 of its 9 opponents this year, averaging 36.8 rebounds per game. The Mustangs have a 6.3 rebounding margin (3rd in AAC, 57th NCAA), as opponents are pulling in 30.4 per game. SMU limited Wyoming to 16 rebounds on Dec. 5, marking the first time the Mustangs held an opponent to 16 or less rebounds since Savannah State had 16 on Dec. 19, 2005 (SMU won the game 89-46). INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR 3 MUSTANGS: Senior Yanick Moreira played for the Angola national team in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. He averaged 17.8 points and 8.2 rebounds with two double-doubles while shooting 59.4 percent in five games. Moreira finished the tournament with 38 points (17/24 FG) and 15 rebounds in a win over Australia. Sophomores Ben Moore and Sterling Brown played on the Global Sports Academy U.S. team for the 2014 Men's Basketball Goodwill Tour. The tour was August 11-19 with games in Belgium, Germany, England and the Netherlands. The goal of the GSA is "education, good will and sportsmanship through sports."
MOODY MAGIC - SMU IS SOLD OUT FOR THE SEASON: On the heels of a season attendance record (107,412), Moody Coliseum is sold out for the 2014-15 season (18 games). SMU has sold over 5,000 season tickets, maxing out Moody capacity. While total capacity is close to 7,000, SMU reserves a limited number of tickets for students, faculty, staff, recruits, visiting teams and scouts.
THE MOODY/HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: SMU is 18-2 in the renovated Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs have won 24 of their last 26 home games. In the past 26 home games, SMU is averaging 75.4 points per game with a scoring margin of +15.3. SMU is shooting 51.2% at home while holding opponents to 37.4%.
MOORE STEALS THE SHOW: SMU junior Nic Moore had a career-high 7 steals in SMU's 72-59 victory vs. Texas Southern on Nov. 26. It was the most steals in a game since Bryan Hopkins had 9 vs. San Jose State on Feb. 10, 2005. In addition, the 7 steals tied Moore for 3rd most in a game in program history. SMU had 13 steals in the game, the most since the Mustangs had 13 in a 68-54 victory vs. UC Irvine on March 19, 2014. He followed that with 4 steals against Monmouth on Nov. 30. His 1.8 steals average is good for 4th in The American.
NATIONAL EXPOSURE: SMU has a regular-season record 25 games slated for national TV. Last season, the Mustangs had a program-best 26 games on national TV, with 20 of those during the regular season.
PAINT IS KEY: SMU has outscored 7 of its 9 opponents in the paint this season. The Mustangs are averaging 30.4 points in the paint while opponents are at 20.4. Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Mustangs have outscored 38 of 46 opponents in the paint.
SENIORS AND SOPHOMORES: SMU has six seniors and five sophomores playing this season. The seniors are Cannen Cunningham, Ryan Manuel, Justin Martin, Yanick Moreira, Jean-Micheal Mudiay and Kevin Dunleavy, Jr. Jordan Tolbert is sitting out this season after transferring from Texas Tech and will be a senior in 2015-16. SIGNEES FOR 2015-16: Sedrick Barefield, Jarrey Foster and Malik "Shake" Milton have signed National Letters of Intent to play at SMU beginning with the 2015-16 season. Milton (G, 6-5, 190) is a four-star guard from Owasso High School in Oklahoma. He was Oklahoma's Gatorade Player of the Year in 2013-14 after averaging 28.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists. Barefield (G, 6-2, 185) is a three-star guard from Centennial High School in Corona, California. He averaged 17.4 points, 4.4 assists and 2.2 rebounds as a junior. Foster (G, 6-5, 190) is a three-star guard for North Shore High School in Houston. As a junior, he averaged 12.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals in leading North Shore to its first Class 5A state championship. Foster was named championship game MVP after posting 16 points and 10 rebounds.
