QUEENS, N.Y. (SMU) - For the second straight day, SMU had a strong second-half rally but could not overcome a first-half deficit, with SMU falling to Auburn, 56-43, in the consolation game of the St. John's Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

SMU fell to 4-7 with the loss, while Auburn improved to 8-3 on the year.
 

The Tigers led 35-18 at halftime, and led by 20 with 7:43 to go in the half, but the Mustangs bounced back with nine straight points, including six by Destynee Hives-McCray, to pull within 11 by the 3:44 mark.
 

Auburn extended its lead to 23 points less than three minutes into the second half. From that point forward, SMU outscored the Tigers 25-15, with Alicia Froling scoring 12 of her 14 points in the second half on 4-of-5 shooting.
 

SMU outrebounded Auburn 45-38 for the contest, with Hives-McCray tallying 10 to secure the double-double with 11 points. Hives-McCray grabbed eight rebounds in the second half, and totaled a season-high seven offensive rebounds in the game.
 

The Tigers made 50 percent of their shots in the first half to help pull out to their big lead. SMU turned up the defensive intensity in the second half, forcing 10 Auburn turnovers and holding the Tigers to just 27.3 percent (6-of-22) shooting for the period. SMU shot just 26.3 percent for the game, including going 3-of-21 from three-point land.
 

SMU will head home for the holidays before turning back around to the east coast to play at defending national champion Connecticut at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday and at Temple at 6 p.m. CT on Dec. 30. The Mustangs will return home to host Houston on Jan. 3 at 2 p.m.

Game Notes

-SMU outscored Auburn 25-15 in the second half. 

-SMU outrebounded the Tigers, 45-38, led by 10 rebounds by Destynee Hives-McCray. Hives-McCray has now grabbed 10-plus rebounds five times this season.

-Freshman Alicia Froling led SMU with 14 points. Froling has scored in double-figures in nine games this season, and in each of the last seven.

-Raven Short had a career-high three blocks.
