The SMU Mustangs conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule by hosting Midwestern State on Monday at 7 p.m. CT in Moody Coliseum. The game will be televised on ESPN3/WatchESPN. The Mustangs have won six consecutive games, most recently a 62-51 victory at Michigan on Dec. 20. SMU is 7-1 at home this season and has won 25 of the last 27 home games.
UP NEXT: American Athletic Conference play begins Dec. 31 when SMU hosts USF at 4 p.m. (ESPN2). SMU's first road league game is after the New Year, at Cincinnati on Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. ET / 10 a.m. CT. on ESPN2.
LAST GAME (W, 62-51 at Michigan on Dec. 20): ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Yanick Moreira scored 19 points and Nic Moore added 17 as SMU beat Michigan 62-51 on Dec. 20. Zak Irvin led Michigan with 17 points, while freshman Mark Donnal added 13. The Mustangs (8-3) were bolstered by the return of Markus Kennedy, their star post player who sat out the first semester after being ruled academically ineligible. He finished with five points and three rebounds in 10 minutes. SMU got off to a quick start, hitting eight of its first 11 field goals and grabbing the offensive rebound on two of the misses. Michigan went cold at the start of the second half, making just one of its first nine shots as SMU built a 10-point lead. Caris LeVert ended the drought with his first basket of the game, and when the Wolverines scored the next seven points, they were back within 39-38. Derrick Walton Jr.'s 3-pointer gave the Wolverines their first lead since 2-0, but Michigan went cold again down the stretch, missing nine of 10 shots to allow SMU to pull away.
AWARDS: Nic Moore has been named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 (Nov. 17) and the Naismith Trophy 50 Watch List (Dec. 3). Nic Moore and and Markus Kennedy were selected unanimous preseason All-American Athletic Conference by the league's coaches. Yanick Moreira was named The American's Player of the Week on Dec. 22. SMU also has five weekly honor roll selections from The American; Nic Moore three times (12/1, 12/8, 12/22), Ben Moore (11/17) and Keith Frazier (12/15). (The Naismith Trophy will announce the Midseason 30 on Feb. 12. The Wooden Award will select 25 players for the midseason list in early January.)
Nic Moore UP FOR NAISMITH TROPHY AND WOODEN AWARD: Nic Moore was named to the 2015 Naismith Trophy Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Dec. 3. The award recognizes the top Men's College Basketball Player of the Year. Moore, is averaging team-bests in scoring (14.3), assists (5.1) and steals (1.8). A Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team selection, Moore is shooting 47.4 percent from behind the arc. He has been named to the AAC weekly Honor Roll twice, most recently on Dec. 8 for scoring a season-high 25 points with 4 assists over [RV/RV] Wyoming. The Atlanta Tipoff Club will announce the Midseason 30 on Feb. 12, 2015. On Nov. 17, Moore was named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The Wooden Award National Advisory Board will select 25 players for the midseason list in early January.
THE SERIES VS. MIDWESTERN STATE (1-0): SMU won the first meeting with Midwestern State on Dec. 17, 1966. The Mustangs won 89-74 behind 25 points from Denny Holman.
LAST MEETING VS. MIDWESTERN STATE (W, 89-74, vs. Midwestern State on Dec. 17, 1966): SMU shot 53.5% in a 89-74 win over Midwestern State on Dec. 19, 1966. Senior Denny Holman led all scorers with 25 points on 10 of 19 shooting. Senior Charles Beasley added 21 points and 9 rebounds while Sophomore Lynn Phillips had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Midwestern shot 45.6% and had three scorers in double-digits.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PLAY BEGINS: SMU opens the second season of the American Athletic Conference by hosting USF on Dec. 31. The Mustangs lost their AAC opener last year 65-57 at Cincinnati (Jan. 1, 2014), however SMU won its AAC home-opener 74-65 vs. then-[17/15] Connecticut (Jan. 4, 2014). SMU tied for third place in the inaugural season of The American with a 12-6 mark.
THE SERIES VS. USF (3-3): SMU is 3-3 against USF. Last season, the Mustangs and Bulls split its series with SMU winning 71-54 in Dallas but falling 78-71 in Tampa. Prior to last year, USF won back-to-back season openers in 2008 and 2009. SMU won the first two games in the series, 79-65 at home on Dec. 6, 1986 and 87-66 at USF on Dec. 14, 1987. The Mustangs are 2-1 against USF at home.
LAST SEASON VS. USF (L, 78-71, at USF on Jan. 28, 2014): TAMPA (AP) - Victor Rudd scored 21 points and Chris Perry tied a career high with 18, leading South Florida to a 78-71 victory against SMU on Jan. 28. Corey Allen Jr. also finished with 18 for South Florida, which made its last 15 free throws to seal the victory. Nic Moore scored 23 points to lead SMU which was outscored 38-28 in the paint. Ben Moore and Markus Kennedy each had 11 points and Nick Russell added 10 for the Mustangs. --- (W, 71-54 vs. USF on Jan. 15, 2014): DALLAS (AP) - Markus Kennedy scored a game-high 18 points to lead SMU to a 71-54 victory over USF. Shawn Williams added 16 points for SMU (12-4, 2-2). Zach LeDay led South Florida (10-7, 1-3), with 12 points off the bench. The Mustangs never trailed, scoring the first 13 points and owned a double-digit lead from four minutes after tipoff for the rest of the game. Their largest lead was 26 late in the second half.
THE SERIES VS. CINCINNATI (2-3): SMU is 2-3 against Cincinnati after splitting the season series last year. Prior to last season, the series had been dormant since 1974-75. SMU has lost three games in the Queen City but won the neutral site encounter in 1966, an NCAA Midwest Regional contest in Lubbock, Texas.
LAST SEASON VS. CINCINNATI (W, 76-55, vs. [7/7] Cincinnati on Feb. 8, 2014): DALLAS (AP) - Nick Russell had 15 points to go with several big steals, and coach Larry Brown's SMU Mustangs stayed undefeated at home with a 76-55 victory on Feb. 8, 2014, over No. 7 Cincinnati, ending the Bearcats' 15-game winning streak. Russell had two steals in less than a minute that led to breakaway baskets, with a 3-pointer from Nic Moore in between, to cap an 11-0 run by the Mustangs after Cincinnati cut the gap to 48-41 midway through the second half. Ben Moore also had 15 points for SMU, while Nic Moore scored 14 and Cannen Cunningham 11. AAC scoring leader Sean Kilpatrick led Cincinnati with 22 points on 5-of-18 shooting, including 3 for 12 on 3-pointers. --- (L, 65-57 at Cincinnati on Jan. 1, 2014): CINCINNATI (AP) -- Justin Jackson scored 17 points as the Cincinnati Bearcats pulled away for a 65-57 win over SMU. Sean Kilpatrick overcame a second straight poor shooting night to finish with 13 points and Jermaine Sanders and Shaquille Thomas each added 10 for the Bearcats (12-2). Markus Kennedy was the only Mustang to reach double figures, finishing with 12 points as SMU (10-3) was held to its second-lowest point total of the season. Sanders connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to help Cincinnati take a 32-30 halftime lead. Kennedy scored six of the last eight points of a 16-3 SMU run that left the Mustangs leading, 22-14, with 6:34 left in the first half. The Bearcats countered with a 12-0 run capped by four straight points by Jackson, whose five blocked shots before halftime matched his season high for a game. The Bearcats never trailed after Jackson converted a three-point play for a 24-22 lead with 3:24 left before halftime. SMU outrebounded Cincinnati 32-30.
HALL OF FAME HEAD COACH Larry Brown: He was named head men's basketball coach at SMU on April 19, 2012. He is the only head coach to win both an NCAA title (Kansas 1988) and an NBA Championship (Detroit 2004). Brown was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach on Sept. 27, 2002. He is in his 40th season as a head coach and 10th at the NCAA level. He has an overall record of 1704-1222 when combining his head coaching marks from the NBA, the ABA, the NCAA and USA Basketball. His collegiate record is 227-91 (50-30 at SMU), making the NCAA tournament in his first seven seasons including three Final Fours (1980, 1986, 1988) and the 1988 NCAA title. At SMU, he led the Mustangs to the 2014 NIT title game.

#22/22: SMU was ranked No. 22 in the preseason in both the AP and USA Today Coaches Top 25. It was the Mustangs' first preseason ranking since being No. 10 in the AP poll prior to the 1984-85 season. In 2013-14 SMU was in the top 25 in four of the last five regular season polls, being ranked for the first time since 1984-85. SMU finished tied for third in the inaugural season of the American Athletic Conference, going 12-6 with two wins over NCAA Champion Connecticut. The Mustangs tied for the third-best single-season turnaround in the nation last year with a 12-win improvement (15-17 in 2012-13).
50 IN A HURRY: Head Coach Larry Brown won his 50th game at SMU when the Mustangs defeated Michigan 62-51 in Ann Arbor on Dec. 20. Brown hit the milestone in 80 games, the fastest to reach the milestone in program history. The previous fastest was Jimmy St. Clair who did it in 86 games (140-108 from 1924-1938).
1,000 FOR Nic Moore: Nic Moore, needing 3 points, scored 17 at Michigan to pass the 1,000 points in the 83rd game of his career. Including his freshman season at Illinois State (349 pts), Moore is at 1,014 career points. This season Moore leads SMU in scoring 14.7 ppg (7th AAC), including scoring in double-digits in 9 games.
2014 NIT FINAL: In SMU's second season under Larry Brown, it went 27-10 en route to the NIT championship game. SMU earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT, winning home games over UC Irvine (68-54), LSU (80-67) and California (67-65 on Nic Moore 3-pointer w/ 6.5 seconds left) to reach the semifinals in Madison Square Garden. SMU defeated Clemson 65-59 in the semifinal before falling to Minnesota (65-63) in the title game.
ATTENDANCE INCREASE - #4 NATIONALLY IN 2013-14, #2 SINCE 2012: SMU had the fourth-largest increase in attendance in 2013-14 and ranks second nationally in increased attendance since 2012. In 2013-14, SMU averaged 5,653 fans per home game, an increase of 2,210 over the previous season. The Mustangs are up 3,640 per home game since 2012. SMU went 18-1 at home last season including a 12-1 mark in Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs set a new season attendance record at 107,412, which included nine sellouts in 13 games at Moody. SMU ranked No. 12 nationally for increased attendance 2012-13, going from 2,013 in 2011-12 to 3,443. SMU and Iowa are the only two programs to be in the top 20 in each of the past two seasons. COACHING FOR LITERACY (CoachingForLiteracy.org): Jonathan Wilfong (SMU sophomore) and Andrew Renshaw, two then-high school seniors from Memphis, Tennessee, founded Coaching for Literacy in 2012. The premise is simple: a participant offers a monetary donation and, in exchange, gets to be the "Assistant Coach" during a sporting event. Proceeds raised from the event go towards funding effective literacy programs focused on helping elementary and middle school students. Coaching for Literacy partners with collegiate and professional sports teams for a unique game-day experience. --- The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate and the social problems associated with illiteracy. By leveraging the unique power of collegiate and professional sports, Coaching for Literacy raises money to support effective local literacy programs and schools focused on educating elementary and middle school students. SMU is hosting CFL events on 1/31/15 vs. UCF and 2/19/15 vs. Temple.
CRASHING THE GLASS: SMU has outrebounded 10 of its 11 opponents this year, averaging 38.0 rebounds per game. The Mustangs have a 8.2 rebounding margin (2nd AAC, 27th NCAA), as opponents are pulling in 29.8 per game. SMU is 8-2 this season when outrebounding its opponent and 42-14 under Larry Brown. SMU limited Wyoming to 16 rebounds on Dec. 5, marking the first time the Mustangs held an opponent to 16 or less rebounds since Savannah State had 16 on Dec. 19, 2005 (SMU won the game 89-46). Since 2013-14, SMU has outrebounded 36 of 48 opponents. The only game the Mustangs were outrebounded this season was at then-[13/11] Gonzaga, 42-40, on Nov. 17.

In 2013-14, SMU shot 50% or better 13 times.
FG% DEFENSE: SMU is 40-7 under Larry Brown when holding opponents at or below 40% shooting. This year SMU has held opponents to 37.8% from the field (3rd AAC, 32nd NCAA). The Mustangs held 7 of 11 opponents at or below 40%, going 6-1 in those contests. Under Larry Brown, SMU has held 47 of 80 (24 of 37 in 2013-14, 16 of 32 in 2012-13) opponents at or below 40%. In 2013-14, SMU held opponents to 38.5% from the field (1st American, 7th NCAA, 6th in a season at SMU). In 2012-13, SMU was 29th in the NCAA in field-goal percentage defense (39.5%). INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR 3 MUSTANGS: Senior Yanick Moreira played for the Angola national team in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. He averaged 17.8 points and 8.2 rebounds with two double-doubles while shooting 59.4 percent in five games. Moreira finished the tournament with 38 points (17/24 FG) and 15 rebounds in a win over Australia. Sophomores Ben Moore and Sterling Brown played on the Global Sports Academy U.S. team for the 2014 Men's Basketball Goodwill Tour. The tour was August 11-19 with games in Belgium, Germany, England and the Netherlands. The goal of the GSA is "education, good will and sportsmanship through sports."
MOODY MAGIC - SMU IS SOLD OUT FOR THE SEASON: On the heels of a season attendance record (107,412), Moody Coliseum is sold out for the 2014-15 season (18 games). SMU has sold over 5,000 season tickets, maxing out Moody capacity. While total capacity is close to 7,000, SMU reserves a limited number of tickets for students, faculty, staff, recruits, visiting teams and scouts.
THE MOODY/HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: SMU is 19-2 in the renovated Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs have won 25 of their last 27 home games. In the past 27 home games, SMU is averaging 75.1 points per game with a scoring margin of +15.5. SMU is shooting 51.2% at home while holding opponents to 36.9%.
MOORE STEALS THE SHOW: SMU junior Nic Moore had a career-high 7 steals in SMU's 72-59 victory vs. Texas Southern on Nov. 26. It was the most steals in a game since Bryan Hopkins had 9 vs. San Jose State on Feb. 10, 2005. In addition, the 7 steals tied Moore for 3rd most in a game in program history. SMU had 13 steals in the game, the most since the Mustangs had 13 in a 68-54 victory vs. UC Irvine on March 19, 2014. He followed that with 4 steals against Monmouth on Nov. 30. He is averaging 1.6 steals per game (T-5th AAC).
NATIONAL EXPOSURE: SMU has a regular-season record 25 games slated for national TV. Last season, the Mustangs had a program-best 26 games on national TV, with 20 of those during the regular season.
PAINT IS KEY: SMU has outscored 9 of its 11 opponents in the paint this season. The Mustangs are averaging 30.5 points in the paint while opponents are at 18.9. Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Mustangs have outscored 40 of 48 opponents in the paint.
SENIORS AND SOPHOMORES: SMU has six seniors and five sophomores playing this season. The seniors are Cannen Cunningham, Ryan Manuel, Justin Martin, Yanick Moreira, Jean-Micheal Mudiay and Kevin Dunleavy, Jr. Jordan Tolbert is sitting out this season after transferring from Texas Tech and will be a senior in 2015-16. The sophomores are Ben Moore, Sterling Brown, Keith Frazier, Ben Emelogu and Jonathan Wilfong. Juniors Nic Moore and Markus Kennedy are preseason all-conference selections. The Mustangs don't have any freshmen.
SIGNEES FOR 2015-16: Sedrick Barefield, Jarrey Foster and Malik "Shake" Milton have signed National Letters of Intent to play at SMU beginning with the 2015-16 season. Milton (G, 6-5, 190) is a four-star guard from Owasso High School in Oklahoma. He was Oklahoma's Gatorade Player of the Year in 2013-14 after averaging 28.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists. Barefield (G, 6-2, 185) is a three-star guard from Centennial High School in Corona, California. He averaged 17.4 points, 4.4 assists and 2.2 rebounds as a junior. Foster (G, 6-5, 190) is a three-star guard for North Shore High School in Houston. As a junior, he averaged 12.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals in leading North Shore to its first Class 5A state championship. Foster was named championship game MVP after posting 16 points and 10 rebounds.
