DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs had five players score in double figures, but a last-second tip-in by Rachel Holivay gave Rutgers a 65-64 victory over the Mustangs at Moody Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
With the Mustangs down 63-62, senior Keena Mays hit two free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining to give SMU a one-point lead. After calling a timeout, Rutgers guard Tyler Scaife sprinted the ball down the floor and attempted a layup, which went off the right side of the backboard but was collected by Holivay for the put-back. The play was reviewed by replay officials, and it was concluded that the ball left Holivay's fingertips with 0.1 seconds on the clock.
Mays led SMU with 16 points, and was joined by Kiara Perry (12), Akil Simpson (11), Korina Baker (11) and Mallory Singleton (10) in double figures, marking the first time that SMU had five double-digit scorers since Nov. 19 against Mississippi Valley State.
Rutgers improved to 18-5 (9-3 The American) with the win, while SMU fell to 14-9 (5-7). The Scarlet Knights are receiving votes in the latest Associated Press top 25 poll.
SMU led 35-31 at halftime, with Singleton making a layup with one second left. The Mustangs led by nine twice, including a 59-50 advantage with 3:25 remaining. SMU held a 59-52 advantage with 1:50 remaining, but the Scarlet Knights rode a 15-5 streak over the final two minutes to take the win.
SMU forced 24 turnovers and tallied 23 points as a result. Mays and Simpson each scored 10-plus points for the 20th time in 23 games this season. Kahleah Copper led Rutgers with 20 points after starting the game 0-for-5 from the field.
Next up for the Mustangs is a trip to Orlando, Fla., for a matchup with UCF on Tuesday at at 6 p.m. CST. The game will be streamed online for free with the American Digital Network.
