SAN FRANCISCO (SMU) - SMU dropped its season opener, falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) at San Francisco Friday night in the opening round of the San Francisco Invite. Caroline Young led the Mustangs with 11 kills, and Kristen Stehling finished with eight kills, but the Dons outscored SMU 48-35 off the attack for the win.
Avery Acker scored a double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs, and Abbey Bybel recorded a team-high 12 digs with four kills. San Francisco hit .310, while holding SMU to a .202 attack percentage. The Mustangs double-up USF on the block, posting 6.0 to the Dons' 3.0, but San Francisco had 59 digs to SMU's 46. Morgan Heise and Cailin Bula each had nine digs for the Mustangs.
San Francisco took a 2-0 lead in the match after winning the second set 25-21, despite Young's set-high seven kills. Neither team led by more than two until the Dons scored three of four points to take a 22-19 lead. After an SMU timeout, the Dons stretched the lead to four, 23-19, and SMU scored just twice more before San Francisco sent the match to intermission with a kill from Valentina Zaloznik.
San Francisco closed out the match in the third set, taking a 25-16 victory. The Dons broke a 5-5 tie with a 3-0 run, and stretched the lead to five, 13-8. Freshman Lauren Mills entered the match for the Mustangs and sparked a 3-0 SMU run, including a block and a kill by Mills, cutting the lead to 13-11. USF scored the next eight points to take a 21-11 lead.
The Dons took the first set, 25-17, behind seven kills from Katarina Pilepic. With the score tied 8-8, the Mustangs went on a 5-1run for a 13-9 lead, their largest of the set. San Francisco rallied, retaking the lead, 17-16, and held SMU to just one more point. SMU was held to a .100 attack percentage, while the Dons hit .351 in the opening set. Stehling paced the Mustangs offensively with four kills to start the match.
The Mustangs play two matches to finish play at the San Francisco Invite Saturday. SMU battles Georgia at 12:30 p.m. CT/10:30 a.m. PT, and faces Fordham at 7 p.m. CT/5 p.m. PT.
