DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team completed opening round action at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational on Saturday after inclement weather cancelled Friday's matches.
In the singles draw, seventh-seeded sophomore Dasha Sharapova won her first round match, defeating Ekaterina Tugarinova of UT Arlington. Sharapova led 4-1, before Tugarinova retired. In the second round, Sharapova fell to Rice's Allison Ho, 8-4.
Junior Hristina Dishkova, seeded 15th, also won her opening round match, ousting Caroline Henderson of Kansas, 8-4. Dishkova then lost to Angeles de los Rios of UT Arlington, 8-3.
Senior Holly Verner and junior Yana Erkeeva also competed in singles for the Mustangs. Erkeeva dropped her first round match 8-6 to New Mexico's Natasha Smith, but won her consolation match against Tulsa's Mahithu Dadireddy, 8-4. Verner lost to Texas State's Ana Laura Gutierrez 8-4 in her first round match.
In doubles, Sharapova teamed up with freshman Maxine Schmidt, who made her first collegiate appearance for SMU. The duo topped Katy Collins and Eva Dench of Texas State, 6-3. In the second round, Schmidt and Sharapova fell to Pepperdine's Apichaya Runglerdkriangkra and Lorraine Guillermo, 6-1.
Dishkova and Verner also advanced to the second round of the doubles draw for the Mustangs. The tandem defeated Nebraska's Lisa Andersson and Mackenna Maddox, 6-4, before falling to Simona Parajova and Alexandra Zenovka of TCU, 6-1.
The Mustangs will compete tomorrow in consolation matches in the final day of the invitational.
