MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (SMU) - The SMU women's golf team sits in a tie for ninth place after Monday's first and second rounds at the 2014 Minnesota Invitational, hosted by University of Minnesota at the famed Minikahda Club.
The Mustangs shot rounds of 307-305 for a 612, a score that puts the team within six strokes of the top five heading into the final round Tuesday. East Carolina leads the 14-team field at 581, good for a 19-shot lead over second place Purdue.
"We have a lot of work to do," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "We did not do the best job at managing the course and this is the type of old course that will make you pay for being out of position. The good news is that it is early in the year and we have time to work out some things."
SMU was in sixth place after the morning round but unfortunately dropped in the standings in the afternoon despite an improved team score.
Junior Alexandra Rossi shot a consistent 75-75 for a six-over par 150 at the 6,119, par 72 layout and is tied for 15th-place to lead the Mustangs. Her seven birdies on the day are tied for the most with the individual leader Frida Gustafsson Spang of East Carolina.
Right behind Rossi is senior Jennifer Park at 154 after rounds of 77-77, which places her in a tie for 31st. Two strokes behind Park is Lindsey McCurdy and Jenny Haglund at 156. McCurdy shot 76-80 and Haglund carded rounds of 79-77.
Sophomore Katie Page ended the day 84-76 for a 160 to conclude team scoring.
"A good round tomorrow will put us right back in the mix," Sutherland said. "Everything we need, we can get better at. The scores are pretty tight so if we play to our talent level, things will be okay."
