Mustangs Finish Ninth In Minnesota Invitational

Day 2 Results

Sept. 16, 2014

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (SMU) - Junior Jenny Haglund shot a third round two-over par 74 Tuesday to lead the SMU women's golf team on the final day of the Minnesota Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota, at the Minikahda Club.

The Mustangs, who entered the final 18 holes in a tie for ninth place, were unable to make up any ground Tuesday, shooting a final round 306 to remain in ninth with a 54-hole score of 918 (307-305-306).

"Today looked a lot like the first two rounds," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "I think we learned a lot of important lessons. Some courses, like Minikahda, make you pay for bad position on the course. We worked hard and did our best on each shot, but on a course like this play can be difficult."

Haglund's final round was the lowest score for a Mustang at the tournament. Her 230 total 54-hole total put her in a tie for 30th. Senior Jennifer Park also tied for 30th by shooting 230 (77-77-76).

"Jenny had a nice round today," Sutherland complimented. "She played very well in the middle of her round which is promising. I like how she competed all day."

Fellow junior Alexandra Rossi had the best finish for SMU after a 54-hole score of 228 (75-75-78), good for 21st. After being tied for the most birdies through the first two rounds, Rossi failed to record one in her final round Tuesday.

Katie Page and Lindsey McCurdy both posted a 54-hole score of 238. Page shot a 78 on her final round while McCurdy carded an 82.

East Carolina held its lead for the tournament title. The Pirates (879) finished with a 21-stroke edge over second place Colorado (900). ECU also had the individual winner in Frida Gustafsson Spang, who shot nine-under 207 (69-66-72).

The Mustangs have a short turnaround as they head to Ann Arbor, Michigan, for the inaugural East & West Match Play Challenge Saturday.

"We will get back to campus and rest up," Sutherland said. "The team will have time to focus on school before we leave for the weekend. It is a long season and we will look for improvements in Ann Arbor."
