Tournament Draws
NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team competed in both singles and doubles on the second day of the Oklahoma Invitational on Saturday. Sophomores Macie Elliott and Mary Wright both recorded wins in their respective consolation draws in singles.
In the Stoops Consolation Draw, Elliott recorded a three-set victory over Julia O'Laughlin of Denver, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
In the Switzer Consolation Draw, Wright defeated Kansas' Melinda Johnson, 7-6, 6-2.
In the Boomer Consolation Draw, junior Vaszilisza Bulgakova fell in the semifinals to Julia Schiller of Wichita State in a three-set battle. Schiller won the opening set, 6-1, before Bulgakova grabbed the second, 6-3. Schiller then won the deciding set, 6-3.
In addition to singles action, the Mustangs also competed in doubles. In the Crimson Draw, Bulgakova and Wright teamed up to notch an 8-6 win over Maria Jose Cardona and Smith Hinton of Kansas in the opening round. The duo then dropped their quarterfinal match to Katelyn Jackson and Samantha Czarniak Rego of Texas Tech, 8-6.
In the Red Draw, Elliott played with Abbi Melrose of Oklahoma. The duo lost its first round match to Kansas' Rachel McNeely and Summer Collins, before they fought back to win their consolation match over Morgan Barnhill and Maureen Slattery of Denver, 8-5.
Play will conclude Sunday with action starting at 9 a.m. CT.
