HOUSTON (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team put together another fine performance on the final day of action of the Cougar Invitational on Sunday. Senior Holly Verner and junior Hristina Dishkova won the No. 1 doubles title, while junior Yana Erkeeva and Dishkova were co-champions of the No. 1 singles bracket.
Dishkova and Verner notched an 8-4 win over McNeese State's Vivian Borbely and Sarah Jarakova to take home the tournament title in No. 1 doubles.
Erkeeva and sophomore Dasha Sharapova also competed in doubles, losing in the finals of the No. 2 bracket, 8-4, to Stephanie Nguyen and Solomiya Zinko of Rice.
In singles action, Erkeeva and Dishkova both reached the finals of the No. 1 singles bracket and earned co-champion honors. Rather than playing each other, the two Mustangs played exhibition matches against Louisiana Tech foes. Erkeeva lost to Louisiana Tech's Jazmin Britos in the exhibition match, 6-1, 6-4. Dishkova also fell to Alexandra Starkova of Lousiana Tech, 6-3 4-6, 12-10.
Verner reached the finals of the No. 3 singles bracket, but was edged by Rice's Nguyen, 6-2, 6-3, for the tournament title.
In the No. 2 singles bracket, Sharapova won her final consolation match, topping Lamar's Teodora Stefanovic, 7-6, 6-4.
In addition to the Cougar Invitational, the Mustangs' also had Vaszilisza Bulgakova, Macie Elliott and Mary Wright competing in the Oklahoma Invitational.
"We had excellent showing at both tournaments this weekend," said Head Coach Kati Gyulai. "I am very proud of everybody's effort and mindset. We showed a lot of heart and pride. We refused to lose."
Next weekend, SMU will travel to Houston, Texas, for the Rice Invitational.
