Tournament Draws

HOUSTON (SMU) – The SMU women’s tennis team completed the first day of play at the Rice Invitational on Friday.  Junior Vaszilisza Bulgakova and sophomores Anna Kate Anderson, Macie Elliott and Mary Wright all competed in both singles and doubles for the Mustangs. 

In the doubles draw, Bulgakova and Wright topped Louisiana Tech’s Jazmin Britos and Alexandra Starkova, 8-2, to advance to the quarterfinals.  SMU’s Anderson and Elliott also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Julia Kral and Anastasija Trubich of McNeese State, 8-7 (5). 

In singles, Bulgakova advanced to the quarterfinals of the Blue Draw, before falling to Starkova of Louisiana Tech in three sets.  Bulgakova notched a victory over Angeles de los Rios of UT Arlington in the opening round, 6-3, 6-1, before falling to Starkova, 6-2, 6-7, 10-3. 

Anderson also competed in the Blue Draw for the Mustangs.  The sophomore dropped her opening round match to UT Arlington’s Elizabeth Thoms, 6-3, 6-2.  However, Anderson bounced back to win her consolation match over Manoela Chiacchio of Louisiana Tech, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7. 

In the Gray Draw, Elliott fell to Christine Foote, 6-0, 6-4, in the first round.  In her consolation match, Elliott used a tiebreaker to edge Taylor Capannolo of Louisiana Tech.  Elliott grabbed the first set, 6-2, before Capannolo won the second, 6-3.  Elliott then tallied the victory by winning the tiebreaker, 10-7. 

Wright also competed in the Gray Draw for the Mustangs.  The sophomore defeated Louisiana Tech’s Haley Ballinger, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals, where she was defeated by Angela Lorenzo of Houston, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.
