Sept. 26, 2014 WACO, Texas (SMU) - The SMU equestrian team opened the regular-season Friday with a narrow 7-6 defeat to Fresno State at the Willis Invitational hosted by Baylor at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The Mustangs did however outscore the Bulldogs in raw score 1117-1076.
"It came down to the very end and I am proud of how hard we battled," head coach Carol Gwin said. "Everyone showed a lot of heart for competing in very hot conditions. A few mistakes ended up costing us but we did a lot of positive things today."
The 10th-ranked Mustangs claimed the hunt seat 4-3 but Fresno State rallied to take western 4-2.
SMU started the match strong by taking equitation over fences 3-1 with points from Schaefer Raposa (83), Sylvia de Toledo (77) and Emma Roberts (81).
"We got a strong performance from our fences group," Gwin complimented. "I'm really happy with their rides today."
Roberts scored the lone Mustang point in equitation on the flat as well. Her 70-47 victory over Fresno State's Kylina Chalack ensured SMU's 4-3 hunt seat win.
SMU claimed one point in both reining and horsemanship. In horsemanship, Hannah McCain prevailed 70.5-68 over Taylor Dixon. In reining, Morgan Redwine was victorious over Hailey Robinson 66-62.5.
The Mustangs began its meet with UT Martin after the Fresno State competition. No scores were provided as the two teams completed flat and reining. The two sides will resume the meet Saturday at 10 a.m. After facing the Skyhawks, SMU wraps up the invitation by facing in-state rival Baylor.
"As a team, we have to improve," Gwin said. "Our goal tomorrow is to take a step in the right direction. This is a very talented team and they will be able to do many great things this season. For now we need to keep building. Tomorrow is a new day and we look forward to the challenge."
