Jan. 30, 2015

Box Score

AUBURN, Ala. -
The fifth-ranked SMU equestrian team fell, 14-6, to No. 4 Auburn in the spring opener at the Auburn University Horse Center on Friday. The meet was the first of a two-day SEC road trip for the Ponies, who face No. 3 South Carolina Saturday.

The day began with equitation over fences, which Auburn won 4-1. Schaefer Raposa brought home the lone point as she took a 20 point victory (85-65) over Megan Bifano. Leina King (86) and Emma Roberts (85) both had scores in the 80's but unfortunately came up just short of their counterpart.

SMU went into intermission trailing 7-3 after horsemanship. Courtney Line scored a season-best 73.5 for her second win in the discipline this season. Her opponent, Hannah Stephens, scored a 72.5. The other Mustang point came from Hannah McCain who defeated Hannah Loseke 71-70.5. The win improves McCain to 4-3-1 in head-to-head matchups.

The Tigers also won reining 3-2. Casey Bibbs and Line each won their respective point. Bibbs won her first point since the UT Martin meet with a 67.5-66.5 victory over Allie Dusha. Line defeated Elizabeth Cosper, 66-64.

Auburn sealed the match by winning the flat 4-1. Sylvia de Toledo scored a season-high 95 to claim a point. Her opponent, Ashley Foster, scored a 94. de Toledo is 5-2-1 on the flat this season.

Saturday's meet in Blythewood, S.C., will be a reunion for head coach Carol Gwin. Prior to SMU, Gwin was an assistant with the Gamecocks for four years as she helped the program win back-to-back SEC titles. The meet will begin at 9 a.m. CT and live scoring can be found here.

Head Coach Carol Gwin:
"Auburn is such a strong team that today served as a great learning experience for us. They have the potential to beat anyone in the country. We did well in some areas today but we know we need to improve. I was particularly happy with our western riders, as they put forth a strong performance. We knew how tough the weekend was going to be, so we just have to focus for tomorrow against South Carolina."
