Women's Soccer Falls To Conference Foe Tulsa

Box Score | Season Stats

TULSA, Okla. (SMU) - Gabrielle Petrucelli scored her first goal of the season, but the SMU women's soccer team fell to Tulsa on Thursday at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.

Gabrielle Petrucelli's goal in the 20th minute was the second of the senior's career in the Mustangs 2-1 loss to Tulsa (10-1-1, 1-0-1).

Gabrielle Petrucelli received a pass from Taylor Jackson in the box, and the Mustang midfielder scored from three yards out to tie the match at 1-1. The Mustangs (4-5-3, 1-1-1) had several more chances in the first half as they put three shots on goal and had four corner kick opportunities.

Early in the second, SMU had back-to-back scoring chances when Claire Oates hit a header wide followed by a Lissi Lonsberry shot on goal.

The Mustangs managed nine shots with five going on goal against Tulsa.

The SMU defense was busy with the Golden Hurricane offense, facing 14 shots throughout the match. Mustang goalkeeper Shannon Moroney made 5 saves and now has 38 on the season.

Tulsa got on the board early, as Rachel Thun scored in the eighth minute of play. SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli thought the Mustangs were not deterred by the early deficit.

"We responded really well, and came back and got one, and had good play in the second half," Chris Petrucelli said. "Our response was great."

The Golden Hurricane scored the go ahead goal in the 69th minute, which turned out to be the game-winner.

"It was pretty even, could have gone either way," Chris Petrucelli said. "They got the goal in the second half."

SMU will continue their road trip as it takes on Memphis on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT in Memphis, Tennessee.

"Memphis will be a hard game," Chris Petrucelli said. "We have to do the little things, and hopefully we can come away with a good result."
